Where It Started

I was born at Box Hill Hospital and grew up in Melbourne: Box Hill Primary, then Koonung Secondary College. I started a degree at Melbourne University and left before finishing it to go backpacking through Europe on ten dollars a day.

I spent almost two years moving around Europe, working wherever I could and spending as little as possible. At some point along the way I ended up on a kibbutz near the Sea of Galilee in Israel, where I stayed for about six months. After that, I joined a camel trek down along the Red Sea and into the Sinai Desert, overnighting with Bedouin tribes along the way.

Work, and Getting Around

Back in Melbourne I worked in IT and computer consulting for a long time. It paid well and it travelled. Over the years I worked out of:

  • Kuala Lumpur
  • Singapore
  • Bangkok
  • London
  • New York
  • Buenos Aires

Argentina is where I learned Spanish. It's come in useful more than I expected, particularly sailing through the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Eventually I moved to Bali and went fully remote, based just outside Ubud. That was a good few years.

The Sailing Chapter

In 2013 I bought a Beneteau Oceanis 45, ordered from the factory in France and picked up in Antibes six months later. I named her Alegria, which is Spanish for joy and happiness. She's now based at Port Fontvieille in Monaco, which has become as close to a home port as I've got.

Sailing areas so far:

  • The full Mediterranean: Corsica, Sardinia, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, the Balearics, the Greek Islands, Turkey, Malta, Croatia
  • The Eastern Caribbean, including the British Virgin Islands, after crossing the Atlantic solo in 2023, Monaco to BVI
